Dunn, NC – Aubrey Horne, a cherished member of the Dunn community, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2024, at the age of 79. Aubrey was born on March 14, 1945, to the late James and Mildred Horne.
Aubrey was known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his church, and his community. He spent his entire life in Dunn, where he became a beloved figure, respected for his kindness, generosity, and strong work ethic.
Aubrey graduated from Dunn High School in 1963 and went on to work in various capacities within the town. He began his career at the local post office, where he worked diligently for over 35 years before retiring in 2000. His colleagues remember him as a dependable and friendly presence who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met.
A man of deep faith, Aubrey was an active member of Dunn Baptist Church for over five decades. He served in numerous roles, including deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. His voice, both in prayer and song, was a source of comfort and inspiration to many.
Aubrey was also an avid gardener, known for his beautiful roses and bountiful vegetable garden. He took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor with friends, neighbors, and local charities. His green thumb and generous spirit were well-known and appreciated throughout the community.
A devoted family man, Aubrey is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Clara Horne; his two children, David Horne (and wife Linda) and Susan Horne Carter (and husband Mark); and his four grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Sarah, and James. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Horne Matthews, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Aubrey’s life will be celebrated with a visitation at Dunn Funeral Home on July 15, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Dunn Baptist Church on July 16, 2024, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor John Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Harnett Hospice for their compassionate care during Aubrey’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dunn Baptist Church or the Harnett Hospice in memory of Aubrey Horne.
